BIG IDEA

With the Old Town Plaza, and adjacent Railroad Street improvements, the city hoped to revitalize the Old Town Historic District by realizing a pedestrian-friendly, community hub, capable of hosting a number of community events and providing a catalyst for further investment in the area.

THE STORY

The site had been used informally as an event space and farmer’s market site until CALA was brought in to develop the design of the plaza into a permanent, vibrant park and event space for the community. Throughout the process community outreach and project updates were essential to ensure that the project addressed the needs of the community, city, and local businesses during and after construction.

The final project includes a 9,000 sq. ft. open air pavilion, concert lawns, a gateway plaza, picnic areas, permeable paving and supporting facilities. The “barn quilt” entry plaza pavement design, industrial shade structures, the large canopy reminiscent of historic train depots, and various other details throughout the design create a site that supports current social and recreation needs while providing a design that enhances the Old Town charm.

THE DETAILS

CALA was hired on by Willdan Engineering, the consultant liaison for the City of Elk Grove, to lead the design team. Services included preliminary design, design development, public outreach, construction documents, and construction assistance to the City’s construction management team during construction. Old Town Plaza has been wildly successful since it’s opening and has been heavily praised by the community and decision makers.
