Building Consensus: The five block
section along Main Street already had a grand plan, prepared
by a consulting firm. The roadblock to implementation was
the business owners were metaphorically not on the same street.
Rather than reinventing the plan, Callander Associates staff
worked closely with public works, planning and the City Manager's
staff to develop a simple, yet open, and candid public input
process. Using the gold rush history of the community as a
design theme, our staff worked with the business owners, listening
and putting forth familiar materials and design concepts into
a plan supportable by the group. After participating in the
public workshop conducted by our project manager, one of the
originally skeptical business owners was quoted as saying
For a first pass, you’ve done a pretty good job. The
design development plan is nearing completion!
