This half-mile long bayfront roadway
improvement project involved resolution of several complex
issues, including public access, landfill capping, roadway
engineering, agency approvals, and creation of shellfish habitat
as mitigation. Callander Associates' responsibilities included
master planning the public access improvements, processing
permits through the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development
Commission and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and preparation
of construction documents. Specification of planting and irrigation
improvements to be installed on top of a clay cap leachate
barrier was among many challenges unique to the project. A
specially-designed sloping substrate for shellfish habitat
was developed by Callander Associates' staff in conjunction
with the California Fish and Game Department. As installation
was completed in 1992, the design intent became apparent:
a bayfront promenade linking seating areas and providing for
substantially more public use and enjoyment than before. |
