The San Lorenzo Village Homes Association, eager to continue planning efforts within this approximately one mile stretch of Hesperian Boulevard, sought and was awarded a Metropolitan Transportation Commission TLC planning grant. The awarded grant allowed the association, and the County of Alameda, to hire Callander Associates to complete a community based master plan. The recapturing of the pedestrian environment and creating an identifiable timeless character for the community were two main goals of the project. Through a series of intensive stakeholder design charettes and a trio of community workshops a plan emerged with expanded sidewalk areas, plazas, entry features, consistent street tree canopies, thematic pedestrian lighting, improved transit stations, and continuous bike lanes. The plan also identifies realities of a multi-phased project including material standards, detailed cost estimates and realistic phasing options.
