The historic Emmett store, located
at the ceremonial gateway into the City of Belmont, could
not be salvaged during the construction of the Caltrain grade
separation project. The loss of this historical and cultural
site prompted strong support from the community, Historical
Society, Arts Commission and the Parks and Recreation Department
to create a landmark to both signify the past and to provide
a gateway plaza for the City.
Callander Associates was hired to facilitate a series of
public workshops and to develop a master plan that address
the communities goals. Plan elements include:
- Developing the site as a transportation plaza with an historical and cultural theme
- Incorporation of murals, sculptures and other art forms
- Provisions for outdoor educational opportunities
- Enhanced pedestrian, bicycle and vehicular connections to other historical and local attractions
