Re-using the Southern Pacific Railroad right-of-way, Callander Associates designed 3-1/2 miles of pedestrian and bike trail for the City of Monterey. The trail takes users to the most scenic areas in Monterey, including historic Cannery Row, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Shoreline Park, and Fisherman's Wharf. With the trail adjacent to residential and commercial properties, Callander Associates addressed the concerns of local residents and businesses at a series of community workshops and public meetings. The firm's extensive background in agency processing facilitated trail approval from the Joint Powers Agency, Coastal Commission, Caltrans, State Department of Parks & Recreation, and City authorities. Numbers of users has exceeded the City's expectations and provided a popular alternative to automobile travel between tourist destinations.
