When BART completed the extension from
Colma to Millbrae, the resulting “vacant land”
created an unparalleled swath through neighborhood fabrics
and also an opportunity for a multi-use bikeway and linear
park connecting the dozens of neighborhoods of the upper San
Francisco Peninsula. Callander Associates assisted the City
of South San Francisco in obtaining the first of several MTC
grants. The first grant funded a public outreach program which
was conducted by Callander Associates. The success of the
project specific outreach program along with the BART Linear
Park Master Plan, completed in 2003, provided the basis for
multiple grant applications, with which Callander Associates
was the grant writer. These applications resulted in almost
$300,000 awarded to the City for two pedestrian mid-block
intersection improvements and over $1,900,000 in federal TDA
grant funds for construction of Phase 1 of the trail.
In addition to developing plans which provide for safe crossing
measures and which connect BART stations, schools, parks,
and business centers to the residents that use them, Callander
Associates developed a signage program and trail standards
to give the trail a unique identity as a City destination
in its own right. Callander Associates also assisted the City
in its management of the federal aid process by ensuring that
the drawings and design met federal requirements stipulated
in the Local Assistance Procedures Manual. |
