The Tillotson Parkway Extension is
the next one-mile expansion of the 60 foot wide Tillotson
Corridor parkway system. One of the biggest challenges of
this project was to create a seamless continuation of the
existing parkway in terms of character and appearance, while
solving the existing parkway’s problems. Issues to be
addressed included tremendous amounts of maintenance costs,
inadequate seating, and security issues.
Callander Associates was able to take advantage of the perfect
east-to-west linear character of this parkway. Focal points
of large specimen trees and seating areas help guide users
along the path. Maintenance costs will be greatly reduced
by limiting turf areas to usable spaces and to areas where
the parkway is visible from the road. Other solutions include
safe pedestrian crossings, low shrubs to increase security,
a central irrigation control system, and a safe separation
of pedestrian and bicycle traffic.
