Shoreway Environmental Center   back | previous | next

The South Bayside Waste Management Authority (SBWMA) is in the midst of turning the Shoreway Recycling and Disposal Center into a world-class, LEED-certified operation known as the Shoreway Environmental Center. In addition to waste reduction and recycling, the design of these improvements provides the opportunity to demonstrate SBWMA's commitment to broader community sustainability goals such as energy and water conservation, improved air quality, and environmental education. Callander Associates' landscaping plan is a critical component of efforts for sustainable facility design. Some of our methods include:

  • Reducing the need for water by selecting predominantly drought-tolerant plantings, utilizing drip irrigation and reclaimed water (gray water) when available
  • Reducing energy consumption by using wall mounted wire trellis structures with deciduous vines on the south, east, and west facing facades
  • Facilitating the capture and use of stormwater on site through the design and use of bioretention areas and the use of permeable paving where appropriate

The new plan also conveys the "greening" of the site through a significant increase in landscaped areas compared to the original site conditions. These areas include:

  • A Sustainability Demonstration Area at the main entrance to the Visitor's Center incorporating a stormwater distribution wall, drought tolerant plantings, and interpretive signage
  • An employee patio area with flexible seating and bicycle racks for those who commute by bike. Large scale shrubs will provide a buffer from wind and noise and a series of wire trellis structures on the Transfer Station will provide a human scale next to the patio area.
  • New large scale trees to reduce the visual impact of the employee parking lot on the east side of the Transfer Station
  • Dense compact shrubs and ground cover to discourage accumulation of wind blown debris
