Whisman Station is an innovative, transit-oriented
community consisting of several high and medium-density developments
including single-family homes. The neighborhood features a
variety of housing types, narrow pedestrian-friendly streets,
public open space and parks, reduced setbacks from sidewalks,
and access to the adjacent VTA light rail station.
Callander Associates collaborated with the architect, civil
engineer, and owner to provide the landscape design of the
313-unit urban infill development as well as the adjacent
park. The challenging site is bisected by light rail tracks
and surrounded by freeways, large arterials, and industrial
areas. In addition, the neighborhood connectivity consists
primarily of circles, cul-de-sacs and dead-end stubs. Callander’s
design mitigated the issues, created pleasant pedestrian walkways,
broke up the uniformity of the houses, and provided a buffer
from the road noise. |
