Collaborating with the architect, Callander
Associates designed the flow of pedestrian open spaces which
included a swimming pool, spa, tot lots, and project entry
features for this 600 unit apartment complex.
Sensitivity to the many existing trees and other site constraints
influenced this successful design. Designing the pool area
was especially challenging with its space limitations and
many program elements. To visually expand the area yet respect
drought constraints, lawn areas were strategically placed.
Also a transparent pool fence design was selected, tying the
water into its surroundings. Heating the pool and spa was
cleverly accomplished through the use of solar heating units
concealed above trellis structures.
Existing mature plantings presented an opportunity to provide
the project with 'instant impact'. Working closely with the
architect, civil engineer, and the City; Callander Associates
was successful in preserving the majority of mature trees
along the street frontage. Special measures taken in the preservation
of the trees included repositioning some of the buildings
and careful grading to minimize root disruption. |
