With over 140 parks in their jurisdiction,
the City of San José has their work cut out for them when
it comes to upgrading these facilities to current safety and
access requirements. Callander Associates is fortunate to
have assisted the City with many of these efforts. At Lone
Hill park, as at other facilities, the goal has always been
to go beyond the ‘basic requirements’ and take
the opportunity to look at the entire park, it’s context,
and the opportunities and constraints that reveal themselves.
Park access and safety issues were addressed by complete redesigns
of the play areas, the removal and replacement of the existing
restroom and the creation of accessible paths of travel through
the park. Beyond these basic improvements the park has been
improved by the sensitive addition of plantings to provide
a greater sense of place. The incorporation of indigenous
boulders into the central seating area draw on and enhance
the natural character of the site. The addition of paths responding
to the ‘desire lines’ that have been described
in the landscape through years of use by the community add
logical connections. Public workshops held on site helped
flush out the program and insured that the facility that was
returned to the Community was significantly better than it
was before.
