Most community parks have a host of
site related design issues, but this particular Stockton site
introduced a number of neighborhood related issues. The park
had been well master planned by City staff years earlier,
but the delays in moving forward with implementation were
becoming very unpopular. Realizing this complexity and urgency,
City staff selected Callander Associates to artfully resolve
the site problems within a framework of community outreach
process that efficiently moved the project forward. Part of
the workshops focused on development of a unique neighborhood
driven "Caribbean Theme" as well as timely milestones.
The resultant design incorporates light colored architectural
elements, tropical like plantings, and expanses of green lawn,
but all within the maintenance guidelines established by the
City.
The site also functions as PG&E transmission corridor
and seasonal storm water drainage basin, adding to the complexity
of site planning and recreational design process. The lower
elevation areas of the site were designed to accommodate the
drainage, but double as valuable open space within the park.
Other park elements, such as the restroom facility, tennis
courts, horse shoe pits, soccer field, and basketball court
add to the rentability of the group picnic shelter. That structure
was architecturally connected to the Caribbean trellis structure
by pre-cast columns, ornamental ironwork, and color coordinated
finishes. City staff and officials quickly saw the results
of a well coordinated design process artfully blended with
a public outreach process that made the neighborhood a City
advocate. |
