As the core street within the San Carlos
Central Business District, Laurel Street is a major pedestrian
artery for downtown visitors. Over the years, physical deterioration
had impacted the aesthetic appeal of the downtown area. An
ambitious streetscape project was proposed for Laurel Street
to recapture its former beauty.
Drawing from the historic features of the area, the improvements
included new intersection bulbouts, sidewalk paving, lighting,
pedestrian crossings and street furnishings. A reconfigured
drainage pattern maximizes sidewalk space by allowing street
trees and lighting to extend beyond the curb line. The Laurel
Streetscape project is the culmination of several years of
streetscape improvements within the downtown area. Previously,
Callander Associates prepared plans for entry improvements
on San Carlos Avenue including a new entry signage, street
median, and sidewalk improvements.
As the gateway to downtown and connection to the adjacent
railway station, San Carlos Avenue has dramatically improved
the aesthetic draw into the Central Business District. Laurel
Street perpetuates the character of the San Carlos Avenue
improvements while providing a pleasant experience for those
seeking to shop, dine, or do business in the downtown area.
Funding for the project came from various sources including
an assessment district approved by the business owners and
a federal grant furnished by the Metropolitan Transportation
Commission. |
