The Turk Island Landfill Sports Complex
Conversion project was divided into two phases: site preparation
of the proposed landfill, and evaluating the sports complex
and open space development on the capped landfill site. This
site presents both regional and environmental aspects unique
to its proximity due to its shoreline adjacency. The site,
composed of over sixty acres, is surrounded by an increasingly
more urbanized area with development occurring up to and adjacent
it.
The closed landfill represented a unique opportunity to address
local and regional needs for recreation. Located on the shoreline
of the San Francisco Bay, it contains a control drainage system
to the north and a wetlands area adjacent the residential
area. An existing small park was located on normal land. The
sports complex was proposed on Areas A and B of two landfill
parcels which required consolidation and regrading of landfill
portions. Callander Associates was selected by the landfill
developer for landfill and recreational planning expertise,
and collaborated with the team comprised of civil, geotechnical
and environmental consultants. |
