In 2001 the Citizens of the City of
San José passed Measure P, a $228M Bond Measure intended to
fund park improvements throughout the City. Of these funds,
approximately $14M was slated for the development of Singleton
Sports Park.
With space at a premium, San José followed the lead set by
other high density municipalities: they proposed to provide
additional recreational facilities on marginal lands heretofore
considered unsuitable for such development. Lying in the heart
of the City, the recently closed Singleton Landfill provided
such an opportunity. At 90 acres the opportunities for a sports
park were self evident. The greater challenge lay in successfully
closing the facility, rendering it suitable for occupation,
and not expending the majority of the budget in the process!
With geotechnical engineers and civil engineers as subconsultants,
Callander Associates had the top tier team required for the
project. Early efforts have included close collaboration with
the Regional Water Quality Control Board to identify suitable
and economic means of capping the facility. Public workshops
were held concurrently, in an effort to balance neighborhood
concerns with the goals of the larger community.
Additional Master Planning efforts included Environmental
Documentation. Throughout the project the process has been
guided by a series of interagency, advisory committee and
neighborhood meetings to assure due process and to guarantee
that the built facility best addresses the concerns and desires
of all. |
