Callander Associates worked closely
with the City of Sacramento, General Services and Convention,
Culture and Leisure Department on the design for landscape
improvements for the historic Memorial Auditorium site. Callander
designed and presented three improvement concepts that range
from a "minimal level" that included planting, irrigation
and functional site improvements to an "expanded level"
design that included public plazas, a street-side drop-off
area, a memorial tablet display, and streetscape improvements.
Through an extensive public outreach component, facilitated
by Callander Associates, a public consensus was reached regarding
a preferred concept which Callander advanced through design
development documents. In order to facilitate a tight project
schedule, the construction of the project was performed through
a design-assist agreement with a selected Contractor. During
this design-assist process Callander worked in close collaboration
with both the City and the Contractor to complete working
drawings and details that addressed and balanced value engineering,
project functionality and aesthetic concerns to the satisfaction
of all parties. The final product has been a success that
will serve to address many of the modern needs of the Auditorium
while preserving and respecting the historic character of
the building and site which is held so dear by many Sacramento
residents. |
