After much deliberation, the Campbell
Union High School District elected to proceed with plans for
track and field improvements to 5 schools simultaneously.
The immediate need for new facilities throughout the District
outweighed a more cautious incremental approach. Planning
the fields began in earnest in the Fall of 05, with a targeted
bid date of March 06 to allow construction to be largely complete
before football season began in Fall 06. Callander Associates
was charged with the task of completing plans for $10M worth
of improvements in 4 months! Core improvements slated for
each school included artificial turf fields and resilient
rubber running tracks. Additional improvements included retaining
walls, fencing, track and field amenities, landscape enhancements,
accessibility upgrades, and sophisticated drainage and storm
water detention systems designed in compliance with recent
SWRCB mandates.
Plans were completed in time for bidding to occur on schedule
and a low bid within 10% of the estimate was obtained. A contract
was awarded in March 06 but the unseasonably wet winter delayed
significant work on the facilities until June. In spite of
these obstacles, all but one of the five facilities were delivered
to the District according to the original project schedule. |
