Water resource facilities are a functional
necessity in the urban community. The more successful facilities,
however, are thoughtfully integrated into the surroundings
and neighboring context. By artfully incorporating vegetative
buffers, highlighting gateway facilities, providing public
trail and recreational activities, or other design approaches,
water facilities may provide for a whole new host of adjacent
public activity and/or greenspace for habitat.
Callander Associates provides professional design and public
facilitation services that can find structured solutions for
water resource facilities. Partnering with architectural firms,
engineering firms, and public agencies, we have developed
context specific and community responsive design solutions.
Design approaches have included a broad spectrum of passive
and active recreational uses, interpretive elements, habitat
restoration and presentation, and new vegetation screen plantings.
Recent projects include multi-use trails and a community dog
park adjacent to a wastewater treatment plant in Burlingame
and screening of water tanks in South San Francisco, to fully
integrated water and open space planning in Sacramento. These
projects have consistently attracted positive attention for
creativity and community sensitivity.
