National Awards

Monterey Recreation Trail and Transportation Corridor
A 1991 Honor Award was presented to Callander Associates by the Washington D.C.-based Waterfront Center, with recognition given to the trail's overall design and appropriate use of materials. The Trail also received an Award of Merit from the American Society of Landscape Architects, Northern California Chapter, in 1990.

Burlingame Shoreline Corridor
The Federal Department of Transportation and the National Endowment for the Arts have recognized Callander Associates’ efforts in upgrading and improving this strategically located Baylands parcel as part of a five-mile-long linear park along San Francisco Bay.

State Awards

Hillcrest Circle Park
Building off the grass roots, neighborhood effort to regenerate their 0.4 acre park, Callander Associates creatively responded to user design participation. This hilltop tot lot park in San Carlos was selected by the California Parks and Recreation Society for a 2005 “Facility Design and Park Planning” award. The park was renovated through community input, citizen fundraising, and innovative planning. A wide range of neighborhood expectations were achieved and included removal of asphalt and nuisance trees, along with creative reuse of rolling topography into a blend of lawn, accessible play spaces, picnic areas, and strategically located plant materials.

Guadalupe River Park
The California Parks and Recreation Society recognized park and trail improvements in San José’s upper Guadalupe River watershed for a 2005 "Facility Design and Park Planning" award. Improvements included installation of a 220 foot long pedestrian bridge spanning the Guadalupe River, construction of 4800 feet of trail along the river, and the creation of a 2-acre park serving the residents of Blossom Valley.

Hayward's Downtown B Street
The northern California chapter of the American Public Works Association has bestowed the “2004 Distinguished Project of the Year - Streets” award on this $2.9 million, four block long, revitalization of the downtown. City staff, the engineering consultant, and Callander Associates collaborated to integrate economic revitalization goals with traffic calming, pedestrian safety, and storefront improvements.

South San Francisco BART/Linear Park Master Plan
The Master Plan for this 2.85-mile long multi-use bikeway and linear park was selected by the California Parks and Recreation Society for a “2004 Award of Excellence”. The park occupies a 50-foot wide corridor of land above the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) line that tunnels underground through South San Francisco. Working with City staff, agency representatives, stakeholders, private property owners, and through a series of public workshops; Callander Associates developed the Master Plan which aligned the pathway through the BART corridor and identified key linkages, street crossings, amenities, and other special features. Construction of the entire linear park is estimated to cost $6.6 million.

Coastside Trail
This three-mile long scenic corridor has been a labor of community involvement and recipient of three award programs. The trail received a first place for the built project category. The second award, from the California Healthy Cities Project, sponsored by the California Department of Health Services and the Western Consortium for Public Health, was for "Outstanding Achievement" in developing and sustaining a healthy quality of life in small communities. The third award, from the California Park and Recreation Society, was an "Award of Excellence" for outstanding achievement in Park Planning.

Tidewater Bikeway
The 2001 Tranny Awards by Caltrans selected this 2.5 mile long greenway project in Manteca as one of only seven “Project Awards” for California and the only one in the category “Bikeway/Pedestrian”.

Caltrain Grade Separation
The 2001 Tranny Award by Caltrans selected this 3.2 mile long commuter rail grade separation project in San Carlos and Belmont as one of only seven “Project Awards” for California and only one in the category “Highway-Conventional Urban: Railroad Separations”.

Santa Cruz Boardwalk Area
The famous Santa Cruz Boardwalk dominates Beach Street along the Santa Cruz waterfront. After completing a master plan for the theme park atmosphere, Callander Associates was recognized by Caltrans for “Excellence in Transportation” planning under the category of Transportation Related Facilities-Inter Modal Facilities.

Neary Lagoon
The loop trail and entrance facilities for this wildlife refuge located in Santa Cruz received the special award of excellence for facilities planning and design from the California Parks and Recreation Society. The project was cited for its unique design solutions for both educating the public and protecting the reserve's habitat.

Truckee River Bridge and Visitor Area
Working within the stringent guidelines of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, the project engineers and Callander Associates designed a 110 foot long precast concrete clearspan bridge and integrated it into the forest and streamside environment. The Tahoe City Public Utility District received a 1992 certificate of appreciation under the public service category for the Agency's awards program. The project was also awarded a Certificate of Excellence for the Outstanding Public Project of the Year 1992 by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and the Department of the Interior.

Sequoia Day Camp
With a theme of "In the Spirit of the Region" the Northern California Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects honored Callander Associates with an Award of Merit (1992) for the design of Sequoia Day Camp. The six acre multi-use camp, located in Huddart County Park near the Town of Woodside was credited for addressing the issue of regional identity.

Calaveras Park
This neighborhood park in Hollister, California, received top honors for design (1990) by The California Parks and Recreation Society. Calaveras Park was master planned by Callander Associates to accommodate the varied interests of both The City of Hollister and the Hollister School District who undertook the project in a joint agreement.

Eagle Park and Community Center
The California Park & Recreation Society has granted the project two awards in 1990: the State Environmental Planning Award for the Neighborhood Park division and the Special Award of Excellence, the Society’s highest award in the State, which is presented to the single project which best exemplifies the highest standards of excellence in planning design and development.

Los Prados Park
The Northern California Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects has bestowed upon Callander Associates a Merit Award for this City park facility, citing it as "A technical tour de force...state of the art design..." and recognition for its innovative solution. Callander Associates provided the Park & Recreation Department with a variety of phases and design alternatives to meet heavy recreation demands and limited construction funds.

Marina Community Center
This outstanding facility has received two awards, one by the American Institute of Architects (San Mateo County Chapter) for Design Merit and one in 1995 for the Award of Excellency by the California Park and Recreation Society. Built to serve the citizen's of San Leandro, the design was a collaborative effort between Callander Associates and TSH Architects of San Mateo, California.

Highlands Recreation Center
The California Park and Recreation Society has recognized a Callander Associates’ project with an Environmental Planning Award Certificate of Merit for "projects that achieved the standard of excellence in design and development" in the Mini-Park category. Callander Associates provided the Highlands Recreation District with design, bidding, and construction review assistance in development and implementation to expand recreational facilities within the constraints of extremely limited space and operating budget.

Local Awards

Baylands Trail
The Association of Bay Area Governments honored the Baylands Trail with an award for creative planning for trails in sensitive habitats. The selection committee was particularly interested in methods used to implement a section of the Bay Trail where difficult tradeoffs needed to be considered in order to protect wildlife habitat along the edge of the Bay.

El Cerrito BART Corridor Trail
Approximately two miles of a combined pedestrian and bike trail were designed by Callander Associates within the BART Corridor in El Cerrito. The trail system connects to numerous streets and other public areas and pays particular attention to street crossings. The City of El Cerrito Design Review Board and City Council presented the design award to Callander Associates for this outstanding contribution to quality of community design and appearance in the City.

Edison West Condominiums
Callander Associates received an American Association of Nurserymen Certificate of Merit Award for the landscape design of Edison West, a 15-unit condominium conversion project. The remodeling of the 30 year old apartment building served as an alternative to the "demolition and rebuilding" option of redevelopment.

Parkgreen Townhomes
The City of San Leandro presented Callander Associates with a Design Award for New Residential Design in commendation for exemplary efforts to improve the quality and appearance of San Leandro. Private gardens, pedestrian paths, auto courts, common garden area, an open lawn area and visitor parking areas were all designed under extensive tree plantings to provide a sense of community and privacy throughout the site.
